Vitamin K2 is an essential nutrient for human health and deficiency in vitamin K2 is common
Vitamin K2 is a part of the family of vitamin K, a group of fat-soluble compounds. Vitamin K2 is essential for the function of several calcium-binding proteins involved in the maintenance of the normal structure of osteoarticular system, teeth, arterial wall and for the regulation of cell growth.
The population is often deficient in vitamin K2, especially with western diets. Indeed, vitamin K2 is found in small quantities in dairy, eggs, fermented foods like cheese, yogurt and natto (a Japanese traditional dish of fermented soybean). Moreover, the bacteria in our gut cannot produce enough vitamin K2 alone.
Supplementation with vitamin K2 helps to maintain a correct level of this essential nutrient in our body and to support bone and cardiovascular functions.
Vitamin K2 as MK-7 is beneficial for bone and cardiovascular health
Vitamin K2 activates a group of calcium-binding proteins through carboxylation, especially Osteocalcin and Matrix GLA Protein (MGP). Those two proteins are involved in a range of biological effects that drive calcium in bones and avoid calcium deposits in the vascular system:
- When carboxylated, Osteocalcin protein promotes the deposition of calcium into the bone matrix.
- When carboxylated, Matrix GLA Protein regulates calcium in the arteries and blood vessels, returning it to the bloodstream for use in other systems, such as bone formation.
According to the World Health Organization, poor bone metabolism is a condition that affects 200 million people globally. Clinical studies demonstrated that vitamin K2 increases bone mineral density and has a powerful influence on bone building.
Studies also highlighted that vitamin K2 significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and early mortality when taken on a regular basis.
